Harry Potter
Tonight is the night. Tonight (Thursday the eighteenth- technically really early Friday the nineteenth) I will be going to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I. Unless you have been conspicuously absent from the face of planet earth for the past twelve to fifteen years you are at least vaguely aware of the phenomenon that is Harry Potter and you maybe even have some idea of what might compel thousands if not millions of people to stay up until three in the morning to watch a movie about a boy with magic powers PART ONE. If you really have been gone for fifteen years you probably have more serious things to worry about than fiction books but if you simply can’t grasp the sheer immensity of the occasion allow me to enlighten you.
There are seven books in the Harry Potter series (all of which are carried, usually in both hard and soft cover, at our store) and they correspond to the seven years Harry spends saving the world from the Dark Lord. Of course that’s oversimplifying things an immense amount. I don’t think I could put into words how good the books are and how much I enjoyed reading them again and again from a child of eight years old through to adulthood. This movie is a BIG DEAL.
If you have not yet read the books you are going to need to set aside some time (possibly a lot of time) to read them. If you’ve already read them (or don’t want to) but need a special Harry Potter something for a special Potter-fanatic someone we have both a beautiful pop-up book as well as a guide to the movies that contains film-making secrets and previously unpublished photography and artwork from the movies. So if the theatre near you has sold-out showings for the immediate future you can at least assuage some of that fever with books.
I will not be back with an update as to how I liked the movie because- let’s face it- everyone who has read the books already knows what is going to happen and- more importantly this is a bookstore and we like to encourage reading.

Thanksgiving
The only thing I really know about Thanksgiving is that no matter what you do- something is bound to go wrong. The turkey will scorch or you’re missing some crucial ingredient from the store that you don’t want to brave the terrifying crowds to get or your relatives are at each-other’s throats. Obviously this is not an ideal situation and you’d like to avoid as many things going wrong as possible. There are some things (such as relatives) that just can’t be helped but there are other things stocking up now can help circumvent.
If decorations, centerpieces, or turkey-themed gifts might be able to help ease your pain on Thanksgiving day (because if the food looks unappetizing you want something nice for your guests to look at or because if you give them gifts they’ll at least have to pay you some kind of complement) we can help you out with non-perishable gourds, welcome-signs and other harvest goodies for Turkey Day. If you’re visiting family for Thanksgiving and can’t cook to save your life, consider picking up a greeting card instead of turning up empty-handed. If you need some culinary help to keep your turkey from burning, or you’re terrified of actually missing an ingredient we have a number of cookbooks with recipes that can keep your turkey moist and delicious and help your make an informed substitution decision instead of guessing. Or even if you’re travelling and all you need for Thanksgiving is a good book for the plane, bus, or train ride we can help you out with that.
Unfortunately we will be closed Thanksgiving Day but we will be open both Wednesday as well as Black Friday. There will be a Craft Fair in the mall that Friday and Saturday so be sure to stop by and check it out as well.

Sparkle Plenty
“Created with a vision of putting a little sparkle in your day.”
Beautiful? Quality? Maine-made? I can scarcely imagine where to begin describing the lovely jewelry that came into the store a few days ago. Historically jewelry denoted rank or achievements or it exemplified wealth and a glance at someone’s jewelry said a great deal about that person. Today in our modern world jewelry says as much about the person wearing it as it ever has.
What the jewelry looks like is the most important part of it. Accessorizing a beautiful outfit with the right jewelry is a task for a critical eye. A task made much easier by beautiful, versatile jewelry that would likely earn a complement no matter what you wear it with. What your jewelry is made of is also a statement in and of itself and these bracelets, earrings, and necklaces are made with real stones and precious metals. Amethyst, onyx, jasper, quartz, opalite, tiger-eye and more as well as gold and silver go into these pieces.
Another statement it may be important to you to make is uniqueness. As these adornments are made with real stones (which often help inspire the design of a particular item) you can have something one-of-a-kind- the type of statement that simply cannot be made by a lot of jewelry, no matter how elegant.
Designed and hand-crafted by Maine artisan Sherry Cennamo this jewelry has another important aspect to voice. Buying local products and supporting businesses in your area makes for a smart ecological and economically-stimulating choice.
One last thing this jewelry will absolutely not say about you is that you spent too much for something so beautiful and unique. Many places you can find similarly-priced mass production costume jewelry that’s made of plastic and cheap metal alloys.
So what do you want your jewelry to say when you put it on or wrap it up with a bow to give to that special someone? Make a statement.

Witches are getting out their brooms and beginning a bubbling brew while ghosts practice ghastly, ghoulish faces in the mirror to scare you in preparation for their favorite night of the year. A night when witches and ghouls can do what they do best and vampires, zombies, and werewolves can walk, shuffle, and howl among us unnoticed. A night when children dress up to play pranks or get treats and the veil between the magical and mundane becomes thinner and a little bit patchy. Halloween night.
While warlocks are out shopping for some eye of newt a more conventional celebrator is probably looking for some festive decorations or spooky stories for the season. If you’re looking for decorations to delight or scare your neighbors and friends we have what you need. If you want a collection of spooky stories to thrill or frighten with we have dozens of titles in the store for you. From a substantial Stephen King novel, to a quicker read like, Zombie Raccoons & Killer Bunnies. If true stories of haunting are more to your tastes we also have many true ghost stories.
If what is Halloween to some is to you All Saints’ Day there are bibles and other spiritually enlightening books in the store to help you commune with your dearly departed. If to you the thirty-first of October is Samhain we have books on Wicca and votives to aid in the celebration of the lives of your deceased friends and relatives.
Whatever you’re about this Halloween, whether it is trick-or-treating or worship- or even if that day happens to be your birthday- we have something for you.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women and surprisingly common among men as well. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention 191,410 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in the year 2006 and 40,820 women died from breast cancer that same year. The American Cancer Society’s most recent estimates for 2010 are that 207,090 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed and 39,840 women will die from breast cancer this year.
Nearly one in every eight women will develop invasive breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. Chances are that you know a woman who is battling breast cancer now or who has in the past. Inspirational books to help her make it through chemotherapy are available as well as ones on nutrition for cancer patients. We have books to help you as her friend understand what’s going on in her mind. Or if you just want to cheer her up with a Nora Roberts or James Patterson novel we have you covered there as well. If you want to show your support you can come in and pick up a key ring, coffee mug, or teddy bear, some of the proceeds of which go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation. We also have a small line of greeting cards that support breast cancer. Included in this line are cards for Cancer Support, designed for those who are currently in treatment.
Through early detection and cancer research supported by contributions from people like you we can help save lives.
