July
by Jazel
this month is july and you needn’t ask why
the dog days of summer begin in july-
so they say anyway
so allow us to let them commence!
we will go out in the woods or the yard (or even that great unexplored wilderness called
“the living room”) and pitch tents
we will go traipsing through the towering ankle-high bushes of blueberries
where at night even the fireflies tarry
and in the wonder of july (though you needn’t ask why)
those fireflies will be dancing faeries
and those faeries too will be dining on blueberries
and when we get sick of those we’ll tip-tip on tippy-toes
and follow our nose
to the hot dogs and grilling with which our bellies we’ll soon be filling
the birth of a nation happened this month, too
so, in case on the fourth you have nothing to do
we’ll go out at night (to most children’s delight)
we’ll watch them spark whiz-bangs and screamy me-mes who want to steal the shows
they’ll crack off showers of technicolor sparkles and bursts of thunderous rainbows
mother nature will want to have her due, too
so some nights there will be no man-made delights
we will set our sights on the sky as lightening forks and other cutlery charge the air
and don’t tell me you wouldn’t care
but as all good things must end
and the calendar just cannot bend
so until next year, my dear,
i will say with a sigh
so ends july (and you needn’t ask why)
July hosts the national month for not just blueberries and grilling but also hot dogs as well as ice cream- the essence of summer. And of course we cannot forget the Fourth of July, our nation’s date of birth (celebrating two hundred thirty-five years this year).
Mr. Paperback hosts not just “Blueberries for Sal” and blueberry cookbooks but blueberry-themed mugs and other items as well as blueberry tea, soap, and jam. And as far as summer reading is concerned we’ve put together a collection of beach books for you to peruse and enjoy as you lounge in the sun or snuggle, cocooned, away from the fear of a thunder storm. For children with those pesky summer reading lists we have a spread of children’s classics re-written especially for them. So if you’re looking for a good book, a patriotic token to give, or blueberry things to take on vacation far away you need only drop in or stop by- and we’ll look forward to seeing you this July.
